Coach Peterson grew up in Utah. At a younger age, he was captivated with basketball and tennis. His sister, Brenda Peterson, was a gifted volleyball participant who launched him to the game. When Coach Peterson attended BYU, he signed up for a volleyball class taught by the legendary Coach Carl McGown. After serving his mission, he returned to BYU and performed outdoors hitter for the Cougars within the late Nineteen Seventies.
