Dubai Championships 2024: Qualifier Kalinskaya upsets World No. 1 Swiatek, faces Paolini in closing

Russian qualifier Anna Kalinskaya shocked World No. 1 Iga Swiatek 6-4, 6-4 to achieve the ultimate of the Dubai Championships, a WTA 1000 occasion, on Friday.

World No. 40 Kalinskaya will tackle Italy’s Jasmine Paolini in her maiden tour-level closing. Unseeded Paolini, ranked 14 locations above Kalinskaya, defeated Romania’s Sorana Cirstea 6-2, 7-6(6) within the first semifinal after saving six set factors.

Australian Open quarterfinalist Kalinskaya fought from a break and 4-2 down and compelled Swiatek into making a variety of errors with relentless hitting within the first set which the 25-year-old wrapped up in slightly underneath an hour.

She broke early within the second set as Swiatek continued to spray the errors.

A pissed off Swiatek threw her racket to the ground at one level earlier than Kalinskaya went up 2-0 and the Russian withstood some late strain to shut out the victory and snap the Doha champion’s seven-match successful run.

“She’s a terrific participant. I do know if I don’t keep calm and aggressive she’s going to destroy me,” Kalinskaya stated.

“That was my plan. To remain aggressive, transfer her lots. I’m glad I gained. She’s unbelievable. I’m glad I had the prospect to play in opposition to her. I’m positive we’ll play lots sooner or later.”

Kalinskaya is just the second qualifier ever to achieve the ultimate of a WTA 1000 occasion since Caroline Garcia in Cincinnati two years in the past. Garcia ultimately gained the title.

The 25-year-old Russian registered her third High 10 win of the week, having defeated Jelena Ostapenko within the third spherical and Coco Gauff within the quarterfinals.
