Olympic medallist Bajrang Punia is about to depart for Issyk-kul in Kyrgyzstan to coach for the upcoming Asian Video games after skipping the trials for the World Championship held in Patiala on Saturday. The World Championship is scheduled to start in Belgrade on September 16 and with Bajrang skipping the trials, he has made it clear he simply desires to focus on the continental showpiece in Hangzhou. “Bajrang didn’t seem for the trials for the Worlds in Patiala immediately. He has submitted his health certificates as required by the Sports activities Authority of India and will depart for Kyrgyzstan shortly to coach for the Asian Video games,” stated IOA-constituted ad-hoc committee member for wrestling Gian Singh on Saturday.
Bajrang had requested the Sports activities Ministry he wished to skip the World Championships trials and as an alternative deal with his preparations for the Asian Video games in Hangzhou from September 23.
The ministry had then requested for a health certificates from Bajrang, which he offered and was accepted by the Mission Olympic Cell (MOC).
Bajrang shall be accompanied on his five-week-long coaching stint in Kyrgyzstan by his coach, energy & conditioning professional, physiotherapist and sparring accomplice.
Bajrang had obtained exemption from showing for the Asian Video games trials final month in New Delhi following his plea that he was not in peak bodily form after an almost two-month-long protest at Jantar Mantar.
He was given direct entry to compete within the Asian Video games regardless of his rival within the 65kg class Vishal Kaliraman topping the trials.
The “injustice” executed to Vishal didn’t go down properly with the khaps, who had all alongside supported Bajrang in his protest in opposition to outgoing Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.
A number of khaps have been questioning the exemption given to Bajrang from showing within the Asian Video games trials and the wrestler getting a direct entry to the Asian Video games.
Bajrang has now indicated that he may withdraw from the Asian Video games if the khaps, who backed him through the protest at Jantar Mantar, inform him to take action on September 10.
